One of the things I love best about Peoples Church is that we are multi-generational. With this comes the reality that all of us are on different stages in our journey with Christ. Some of us have been following and learning from him for years, some of us are just returning to this journey after a season away, and for some of us, this journey is brand new!
One of my favorite passages is found in Joshua 4:19-24. This passage describes the scene directly following when the Israelites crossed the Jordan river, taking their first steps into the land promised to them. I love this passage because God instructs the people to pick up 12 stones and stack them on the shore. Why does he do this?
“When your children ask their father in time to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’ Then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’ Joshua 4:21-22
Our discipleship journey allows us to leave guideposts for those coming behind us.
When we make a commitment to receive Jesus, live like Jesus, and give Jesus away; inevitably people start asking questions. In whatever stage of your journey, you are on, know that there are people coming behind you in our faith family that will need your guidepost to help them to the next stage in their own discipleship journey. Therefore it is so important that we don’t go through this journey alone!
As we finish this month, let's continue to commit to the presence of Jesus, reading our bibles and prayer. But let's also commit to bringing others on this journey with us.
Who could you invite to share in this discipleship journey with you today?
